I know that's a workaround, but my primary issue is that alsa-driver-0.9.4
used to build and run fine (and still does). For that, I'm keeping it as
my preferred and stable alsa-driver release. Trouble is with this latest
alsa-driver-0.9.5. I'm stuck with a complete build in the first place.

I have several machines, each with different hardware configurations (i.e.
hardware soundcards); for example, virmidi and usbaudio/midi are standard
in my studio, but specific soundcards are always changing places and
brands ;)

So to make things standard, my alsa-driver's configure line has been
omitting that handy '--with-cards' option. Having a do-it-all install
script for every box is no option for me, it's a must ;)
