that worked.  what about the modules.conf parameters?

They may well do, but the ALSA module is called "snd-intel8x0".  Try
modprobing that instead...

"ac97" is also an OSS module.  If you load it, you'll have to remove it
before trying to load ALSA.

In that case, I think you probably ought to try the snd-intel8x0 module
again for this one.
