I can't answer your other questions, but I think the reason for this one
is that the ice1712/envy24 chipset has all those channels builtin to the
chip, even when the particular card it's on doesn't use them all. There
are command line options to envy24control that allow you to limit the
number of channels displayed. check the man page.
