All is working now & this is what i did

Ok I don a google search for devfs and now know
that i have not configured the kernal with DEVFS device system .

So i went on and run ./snddevices for the
/dev/snd/* dir & files to be made.
Then shutdown & restarted my system.

All is working now alsamixer , aplay , ect..
very good. Thank, to alsa sound drivers.

I was not getting sound out form my cd-wr
because when i configure cdroast it quit
sending sound to my sound card untill
i installed alsa-drivers , ect.. Good job
men.

Thank's ALSA programmer's

God bless all \

Thanks Eric Dantan Rzewnicki for the reply

And sorry that i have not replyed sooner been
gone 3 days.

I do not have /dev/snd/* dir. at all so thay must
of not been installed for me when runing

/configure --with-cards=cmipci --with-sequencer=yes --with-kernal=linux-2.4 ;make;make install

I think I will have to run ./snddevices for the
/dev/snd/ dir. to be made. But..

Like I said I have good sound now that I installed
alsa drivers just no alsamixer , aplay , ect...

and am not sure if i have devfs or if i run
./snddevices that it will kill what i have now or not???

And if I do run ./snddevices now that I have
every thing installed. Will i have to reinstall alsa-utils , ect.... again ??

Thank's and God Bless All\ David

I'm not sure about devfs since I don't use it ...

for me I think ./sndevices was run as part of make install ...

However I then had to chown <userid.userid> /dev/snd/* before anything
would work.

Hope that helps.

I have it all working and is playing sound good on redhat9 with kernel linux-2.4.20-18.9 But...

When I try to run alsamixer.. after installing
alsa-driver-0.9.6, alsa-libs-0.9.6,
alsa-oss-0.9.6, and alsa-utils-0.9.6 for RH 9
(from source) I get this error:

  alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for
default: No such file or
  directory

Now i have read here at the alsa-list that
to get them to work is to run ./snddevices
in the topdir of alsa-driver if you do not
have /dev/snd/* files.
But...

The Introduction on the C-Media CMI8738 say's
NB. If you are using drivers before 0.9.4 then you
need to run

./snddevices

If you use devfs then you should not run the
snddevices script

So im alittal confussed here.
this is the first time alsa-drivers have been on
this box. Im not sur about devfs how can i see if
i have devfs??

Like I sead my sound is working good with kmix
,KsCD ect.. But I would like to beabal to use
all of the alsa-utils

If I do run ./snddevices is this going to kill
my sound????

Thank's & god Bless all\
David
