system:

  debian unstable
  2.4.21-ac4
  alsa 0.9.6

  mixer says:
    Card: Intel ICH5
    Chip: Analog Devices AD1985

mixer is somewhat strange:

  Master: no change in volume
Master mono: no change in volume

PCM & Surround: both change volume - if at least on of them is zero there is no sound

Center: no change in volume

The motherboard has three line-out jacks, only one of them works (I tried with various mixer configurations, mainly everything 100% and unmuted) - what are the other two for? can they be enabled? It seems like those are for center and surround speakers since the MB box advertises 6 chanel output.

I checked the alsa web site (http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php3?company=Intel&card=i820E&chip=i820E&module=intel8x0) but it does not have any additional info (I checked the linked wiki page as well)

any insights into how mixer works/is supposed to work?

TIA

erik
