Hi,

I just backported Debian unstable ALSA packages to my stable
system. Current ALSA version packaged in the unstable branch is 0.9.4.

The script /etc/init.d/alsa includes calling alsactl store on stopping
and alsactl restore on starting, so mixer settings are saved between
sessions. However, this is hopelessly failing:

# alsactl store
# alsactl restore
alsactl: set_control:962: Cannot write control '2:0:0:CD Playback
Switch:0' : Invalid argument

Even if I delete /etc/asound.state and try again, the asound.state
file created by alsactl store is not accepted by alsactl restore.

Am I doing something wrong?

My soundcard is one of those Neomagic MagicMedia 256ZX included in
some Dell Latitude laptops. Entries for ALSA in my /etc/modules.conf
(in Debian, they are taken from /etc/alsa/modutils/0.9) are as follows:

alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore

options snd major=116 cards_limit=4

alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

alias snd-card-0 snd-nm256
alias snd-card-1 snd-virmidi

alias snd-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-slot-0
alias snd-slot-1 snd-card-1
alias sound-slot-1 snd-slot-1

By the way, Debian creates the options snd line as follows:

options snd major=116 cards_limit=4 device_mode=0660 device_gid=29 device_uid=0

I had to take rid of those device_mode, device_gid and device_uid
parameters manually, as I read in an email by Takashi Iwai that they
are no longer supported:

Any feedback will be very useful for me, so thanks in advance.

Regards, Ismael
