I think xmms needs an oss mixer device. Did you load snd-pcm-oss?

If you did load snd-pcm-oss. Do you have devfs and more than one card and are 
using the second? That's a no go since devfs doesn't create the second 
devices (at least for me it doesn't). 
Or, are the permissions of the mixer devices correct?

To check that things are basically working, use alsamixer in a terminal. 
Depending on your card, there might be many many sliders but at first you 
probably only need pcm and the main volume.
