summary: for some unknown reason I am not (yet) able
to get the fricken sound card thumping...

here are the assorted details for anybody in the know
on cs-4236 cards...

i am trying to configure the alsa-driver for my
CS-4236
soundcard in an IBM thinkpad 600e with Redhat9.

I have been successful in the past, but am having
problems this time.

everything compiles ok, but when I run the
alsa-driver/utils/alsaconf script it freezes during
the
Probing legacy ISA cards section...
after discovering cs4236 cirrus Logic CS4235-9

additional information:
modinfo soundcore provides the following:
filename:
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/soundcore.o
description: "Core sound module"
author: "Alan Cox"
license: "GPL"

and I compiled the driver with the following options
./configure --with-cards=cs4236 --with-sequencer=yes

also, I read the FAQ in /alsa-driver about ISA cards
Q: My card is not detected at all and is ISA based -
non Plug
& Play.Can I try something?
A: If you have compiled driver with the ISA PnP
support, you must force the detection of non-PnP
version of your card with some drivers (use
snd_isapnp=0 parameter - check the INSTALL
file). This problem may occur mostly in portable
computers where vendors suppressed the ISA PnP
extension of sound chips.

do i put this in the /etc/modules.conf & what exactly
is the correct line : snd_isapnp=0 ??? Anyway, I
didn't compile with isapnp.

*** I think the main issue is when I try to insert the

modprobe snd-cs4236

I get this error:
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/sound/isa/cs423x/snd-cs4236.o:
init_module: No such device...

after recompiling the kernel I also updated the
module-utilities to modutils-2.4.25-1.
