well, ecasound wouldnt let me record a .raw file over 2gb, so theres a
limit in place somewhere. Its prob. built into ecasound to make the
resulting files compliant with ms's .wav standard

good call, I'll ask him. its actually sonic foundry, not sourceforge. I use
W64 files currently in windows...
 
and just to clarify, the following file size limits:
fat32 =4gb
ntfs  >terabyte
microsoft .wav =2GB
.w64 = (2^64) I beleive
