I think I'm close to having a working alsa install, but something still isn't right.  Xmms comes up, and I can press play, but nothing happens - like its not progressing through the song, and no noise comes out.  I think I have all 9million kernel modules loaded:

abu:/etc# lsmod | grep snd
snd-pcm-oss            36708   0  (autoclean)
snd-mixer-oss          11328   1  (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-intel8x0           16480   1
snd-pcm                57376   0  [snd-pcm-oss snd-intel8x0]
snd-timer              14432   0  [snd-pcm]
snd-mpu401-uart         3008   0  [snd-intel8x0]
snd-rawmidi            12928   0  [snd-mpu401-uart]
snd-seq-device          3956   0  [snd-rawmidi]
snd-ac97-codec         35232   0  [snd-intel8x0]
snd                    28000   0  [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm snd-timer snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-ac97-codec]
soundcore               3588   4  [snd]
snd-page-alloc          5572   0  [snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm]

I have nforce2 on-board sound.  I'm running alsa-driver-0.96 compiled against linux-2.4.22 via gcc-2.95.4.  I would try some other sound applications, but I can't think of any.  Well gnome-volue-control seems to work without complaint...
