A long time ago, there was discussion of a generic interface for DMA
wavetable engines that did some things like automatic uploading and
conversion of various soundbank formats.  I remember it was in reference
to a YMF card, but the interface could be applied to any card that has a
WT engine and uses DMA to play samples from system memory (as opposed to
cards like GUS/AWE32 with their local memory).

Was there any work ever done along these lines?  I lost track of the
discussion. :)
