Howdy. I gave up a little while back trying to get the M-Audio Audiophile USB
working under my Gentoo install because I needed audio badly and didn't have
the time to fight with it righ then. The OSS compatible USB audio driver
works just fine for playback so I took the easier route since I had a backlog
of stuff to review.

Well I just fubar'd my working OSS install by doing an emerge -u world (which
snuck back in some ALSA related settings) so now seems as good a time as any
to give this another whirl since I have to do research and recompile anyway
possibly to get back where I was before.

=)

My question is the following:

Does anyone have a working setup using the M-Audio USB Audiophile as their
primary sound device (at least for playback)? If so, can you please give me
an overview of how you got it working and an example or two of applications
you have gotten working with it?

At the moment I can get some oddball noises and / or high frequency hissing
out of the sound card but nothing more. The stuff that does come out sounds
like it has the sample rate and bit order messed up and it is inconsistent
whether it plays at all. Definitely not in a happy state.

If ALSA just will not play nice with this device then that's the way it goes I
guess (no Ardour for me) but since I am getting some noise it seems like I
might have a chance.

Any pointers or suggestions appreciated.

Cheers
