I hope someone can help me! So I've been trying to get my machine to send all
the output via the Optical output on my on-board sound. I can get Xine to
play the DVD"s and I can get XMMS to play through the optical output by
putting "spdif" as the user-defined device. The question is, how do I get all
of my sound to go through the optical output? Mainly artsd and things like
games.
I've tried messing around with .asoundrc and putting in all kinds of stuff,
like spdif....but I really have no clue how to specify spdif, since all of
the card/device stuff seems to point to the analog outputs. But I've
inserted all the variations of stuff I've been able to find, but it always
comes out of the analog output.
What are the /dev/snd/pcmC0D* files for? Are they connected to /dev/dsp
in anyway?
Question #2:
While, I am at it, I've read that there's ways of making the sounds
non-blocking, how does one go about this. Does it work for Artsd?
I read about a "dmix" plugin...is this what I am looking for? The closest
thing I could do in the past was set artsd to use /dev/adsp which works for
most cases. However, with my current sound card, /dev/dsp is distorted,
so I have to set everything to use artsd anyways.
Any help would be appreciated. I am happy enough that I can atleast
hear DVD's like they are supposed to be heard, which shows that ALSA
kicks @$$. Just wish there was an easy-to-use graphical interface for
configuring all of the options & such....but maybe later.
