Finally, when I use surround51, the rear speakers actually produce sound! Can 
XMMS also use surround51?

Also with mplayer when I perform the following:

$ mplayer -channels 6 -ao alsa9 <avifile>

I do not hear anything from the rear speakers.

Here is what mplayer has to say about the sound:
