Going to alsa-project.org Downloading all recent packages off the mainpage sending them to the RedHat 9 based Laptop with Yamaha YMF715. Printing out the "details" page for my specific card. Following those inscructions exactly..
About the middle of following the inscructions I got modprobe errors. I changed my PATH variable so that it included /sbin, fixing the problem. I ran all 3 makes and make installs again with this change.
When I got to teh part about using modprobe everything except: modprobe snd-opl3sa2
works. For that one command I get errors: init_module: no such device insmod "blah" failed insmod snd-opl3sa2 failed
That's just a summary of them, the real ones include some specific paths.
So...yea...problems?
Alsa, I decided to ignore those errors and continue following the insructions. The part about editting modules.conf is impossible, since whenever I try to saved the file from gedit, it says it can't even though permissions say I can write to the file.
When I try to play a CD, nothin.
alsamixer has problems. It says "|alsamixer: function snd_crtl_open failed for default: No such file or directory"|
Volume Control from the RedHat main menu also has problems.
What do I do to get my soundcard to work? I've been trying for days now to no avail.
Someone PLEASE help me. either help me to get Alsa to work or help me to do something to RedHat to make it work.
Thanks
SIDE NOTES: The laptop has no access to my network and hence no access to the internet. People have already suggested that I try up2date to download the drivers, but of course I can't do that because I don't want to spend the money on a RedHat subscription nor does the laptop have internet access.
