It sounds like you're trying to play 5.1 material on a 4 speakers system, or
you actually have a real 5.1 system but your app is configured for a 4
speaker system.

I can't help with the ALSA thing, having a different card but mplayer and
xine are hard to configure so I can give hints for those apps.

mplayer: it's able to guess the audio format but it isn't able to guess how
many speakers are actually connected to your pc. Is it actually 4 or 6.
Tell it: "mplayer -channels 4" to downmix the 6 channels to 4 speakers,
or "mplayer -channels 6" if you actually have 6 speakers. For stereo
material it doesn't matter (2 channels only).

xine: all is in the configuration file ~/.xine/config. Tell it which alsa
devices to use for 4, 4.1, 5, 5.1, usually defaults are ok. And don't
forget to put a "1" on the appropriate line(s) to tell it which modes are
actually supported by your card, 4, 4.1, 5, 5.1. Xine is smarter and will
automatically adjust accordingly.

If it doesn't help, it's an ALSA problem.
