To quote my answer to "gui42": Your hardware (ICH5) does not support mixing of multiple streams. Either use software mixing (see <http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=DmixPlugin>), or buy a card which supports hardware mixing (those handled by the ali5451, cs46xx, emu10k1, trident, ymfpci drivers).
