Indeed, not likely, I'm running gentoo, and I get the metalic sounds
*occasionally*.  Maybe once in an hour, and it goes away after
stopping/restarting.  It doesn't happen when the device is open, for
example, in the middle of an mp3.  It seems to have a 10% chance of
opening the device with some kind of error, producing the metallic
sounds.  When it is closed and reopened (hit stop, then play), it sounds
normal.  But it never does it in the middle of playing - only when
initially opening the device.
