Indeed, not likely, I'm running gentoo, and I get the metalic sounds *occasionally*. Maybe once in an hour, and it goes away after stopping/restarting. It doesn't happen when the device is open, for example, in the middle of an mp3. It seems to have a 10% chance of opening the device with some kind of error, producing the metallic sounds. When it is closed and reopened (hit stop, then play), it sounds normal.
