I'm not sure what you mean by "6-channel". Do you use an external
decoder at the SPDIF outputs or do you use a software decoder to hear
AC3 through the 6 analog outputs? Or do you mean something else?

I don't know about software decoding, but (external) hardware decoding
works here:

# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [CMI8738MC6 ]: CMI8738-MC6 - C-Media PCI CMI8738-MC6
                     C-Media PCI CMI8738-MC6 (model 55) at 0xd400, irq 10
# cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 0.9.8.
Compiled on Nov 30 2003 for kernel 2.4.23 with versioned symbols.

I can play the "Multichannelcheck" DD and DTS files from
<http://www.sr.se/multikanal/english/e_index.stm> both with aplay and
with mplayer -ac hwac3 -ao alsa9, and can hear all six channels.
