The Revo has excellent output quality on all channels and is much better 
supported by ALSA than any of the Creative Rubbish in Linux (IMHO).

But OSS mmapped games e.g. Quake3 do not work directly, and the recording 
capability is limited to one line-in (there isn't a gain control) which I 
haven't tested/used.

For "recording/synth stuff" I think you're better off getting an M-Audio 
Audiophile 24/96, although Quake3 games do not work directly with it either.
