Personally I think, that software-mixing as wanted in the "consumer
area" (like system beeps while listening to mp3 or watching divx) and
hi-quality sound as wanted in the "professional area" (24 bit
resolution, multichannel, >= 96 kHz samplerate), are quite opposite
things anyways. 

Why use a better, but slower interpolation in dmix if most owners of
highend hardware wouldn't use it anyways, because they either run things
like Jack or only single applications at a given time?
