I'm trying to set up my brand new Revolution 7.1 for multichannel output. What I'd like to do is:

1) Be able to play back surround sound movies/music through all channels (5.1 or 7.1).

2a) Be able to play back stereo tracks through all channels (route left to front left and rear left and center, route right to front right and rear right and center; send bass to lfe).

2b) Possibly play back stereo tracks through all channels with some kind of artificial surround processing software for 'expansion' of the sound.

3) Play games with surround sound (A3D, etc.)

4) Route my CD player through my SB Live (SB Live has CD in, Rev 7.1 doesn't) and then into my Rev 7.1.

For 1, I've been trying to play back multichannel files with mplayer and aplay, but all I get is static and noise.

For 2a, I imagine that I need to do something with asoundrc. I've been reading the docs and trying different things out but I haven't had success. Can somebody point me in the right direction? Do I use dmix? dshare? something else?

For 2b, I'm really clueless. Is there any software available that will do this sort of thing? Is some asoundrc editing required here?

For 3, I've been told that you have to use 'artsdsp -m'. I tried this, and I can get stereo output from it but it's a little laggy; and I can't get 5.1 surround out of it. Is there an ALSA-only method of doing this, without relying on aRTs?

For 4, I assume that this would require some more asoundrc magic. But as I noted, I'm having some trouble understanding the format and options.

I appreciate any advice anybody can give me. From what I can see, the plugin/routing architecture looks really powerful, and I think if I can get a handle on how it works, I should start having fun with it.
