I've got an Abit AT7 motherboard with RealTek ALC650 audio.

It sounds okay with 5.1 speakers, but when I plug headphones in, it's
piss: no bass at all. It seems like everything under 200Hz has been
completely filtered from the left/right channels. The result is like
some kind of a high-frequency skull drill.

Exploring the alsamixer options, I tried disabling the center/bass
output but there's no difference in the basic stereo output. Still no
bass.

/proc/asound/card0/ac97#0 shows a "Loudness" option which I suspect
may be helpful if it's like "loudness" on old radios (basically a bass
boost), but I can't find any corresponding mixer setting.

Anyone know how to keep it from eating all the bass, or am I stuck on
that?

If I got a DAC box for the S/PDIF output, would the output there be
any better? I'm out of PCI slots, so I'd like to avoid adding a new
sound card as it means a whole new motherboard.
