Okay, new kernel with modular ALSA up and running.

Still no sound, mind you, and what looks like some new problems.  During
the boot, some messages went by apropos emu10k1 and devices, so I had a
look in /var/log/messages:
...
modprobe: FATAL: Module emu10k1 not found.
sound: Loading sound module (emu10k1) failed.
aumix:
sound: Loading mixer settings failed.
...

However, I see that it's aliased to snd-emu10k1, which I can indeed
install with modprobe.  Regarding the commands, see
http://dle.ascendant.ca/alsa_info2.txt .  Perhaps it's just a mixer
setting now.
