I theorize that alsa mixer set some parameter in the chip. Anyway, I deleted the kernel source, repatched, starting from scratch, and recompiled as a module. Also, I deleted some /etc/alsa and/or modules files that I suspected. Then I added myself to the audio group, and also deleted ~/.xmms, purged all mixers, including alsautils, purged alsa packages entirely (on a debian unstable box derived from a knoppix 3.3 install).
Eventually, with these and other steps, I used modprobe snd_via82xx dxs_support=4 dxs_support=2 worked ok, but anyway that wasn't the situation. Good luck.
