Thanks to the help of people here, I've been able to track down the
correct set of install instructions for my laptop, a Fujitsu Lifebook
L470. (I'm using Fedora Core 1.)

<http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=ESS+Technology&card=ES18xx&chip=ES18xx&module=es18xx>

After a month or so of trying, I tracked down the problem I've been having
-- not having the kernal source code on my system. (Long story there, but
suffice it to say, that it's now safely installed.) (It now compiles
cleanly.)

But I've run across a new probelm when I'm trying to "insert the modules
into the kernel", and was hoping someone might be able to give me a
pointer or two...

   [EMAIL PROTECTED] krikket]# /sbin/modprobe snd-es18xx
   /lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2135.nptl/kernel/sound/isa/snd-es18xx.o:
   init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
   /lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2135.nptl/kernel/sound/isa/snd-es18xx.o: insmod
   /lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2135.nptl/kernel/sound/isa/snd-es18xx.o failed
   /lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2135.nptl/kernel/sound/isa/snd-es18xx.o: insmod
   snd-es18xx failed

Any thoughts on where to proceed from here? Unfortunately, the hint isn't
enough of a clue-by-four to bash the answer into my head...

Krikket
