I think that you need to use kernel from the 2.4 series. I have a 2.4.22 kernel and alsa 0.9.0r6 compiles well with it (but with the 2.4.23 it doesn't).
I cannot use the 2.4 series. Apparently there is a lot broken for the amd64 in that kernel, it seemed to work for the most part but some things don't work right - for instance devfs isn't even an option for that architecture on the 2.4.
I really need an option that will work with 2.6.
