If one wants handholding and the type of support to walk through traces , debugs, etc

Perhaps there's a disconnect here? I don't think anybody is asking for "support." What they're doing is saying, "all is not well," and asking for the opportunity to influence future development. Right?

I think there are areas for improvement, yes. I understand that ALSA is supposed to be better than OSS even if I can't see that personally. I also understand that it is volunteer software; I also write open-source. My opinion is that:

1. The version number is wrong. Version 1.x.x should be reserved for those programs that are relatively complete and error free. There is of course no way to be sure of there being no bugs at all, but most should have been hunted down by this point and it should be beyond beta and into the realm of being viable for widspread use. API's should have been frozen LONG before a 1.x release.

2. ALSA has numerous problems in the documentation arena. For one thing, cards that don't work should not be listed otherwise. The developers may want to pay more attention to forums on the website because the particular driver I am concerned with has been a known problem for some time.

3. I don't think that ALSA is ready to replace OSS for the reasons above. In the new kernel OSS is labeled as "depricated" and I think it is way too early for that based on my experiences and what I have seen in this list and forums. It is a mistake for the Linux kernel to make this change at this time.

If you want to label these conserns as complaints that is your perogative. It is easier to ignore them that way I guess. Those of you who want to jump the gun and start yelling at people for having these conserns can take a flying leap into /dev/null and take other, more colorful actions.
