I had the exact same problem on my stationary machine using a VIA
KT133 chipset and the UHCI module. It did work on my Intel-based latop
though. So I suppose it's a hardware conflict somewhere. I don't have
the device anymore, but maybe you could contact the USB kernel
developers?
