I also tried that patch on the Gentoo sources, with the same result.
It's probably failing due to the fact that Gentoo sources have some
other patches applied, but I haven't really looked too carefully at
that.  You could build from the stock kernel sources without using
portage or genkernel.  However, if you're set on using gentoo sources,
emerge the vanilla sources and try applying the alsa diff to it.
Otherwise, you can move to the gentoo-dev-source-2.6.2 which has a 1.0.2
version of the alsa drivers.
