  Hi Russell,

  I doubt if I can be of much help, but I'm curious about this. I know
things like that can drive you nuts! :)

  I'm lost as to why a wav won't play, unless some of the modules aren't
loaded. What do you get with lsmod? Have you run alsaconf, which writes
the appropriate stuff for ALSA in modules.conf? This doesn't seem likely,
since you're hearing input audio, but I can't think of anything.

  With recording, is the line input slider in alsamixer set for capture?
Forgive me if you've tried all this, I'm not sure if you've used ALSA
before, so I wanted to start at the beginning. :) And hopefully somebody
on here has some better ideas.
