Could you post your exact .asoundrc and /etc/asound.conf? You also
might to read http://alsa.opensrc.org/?DmixPlugin for a detailed instruction
on how to get dmix to work.

I deleted both, no .asoundrc and no /etc/asound.conf.

Good. It's best to start simple.

Now reading through that page, it seems like dmix should work out of
the box w/ some command line arguments to aplay, etc. So from a
default install I started at step 1.

/ 1) Install aoss, alsaplayer, mpg123(rsp. mpg321).
done
// 2) Test basic dmix on alsa with: /

alsaplayer -o alsa -d plug:dmix some.mp3 &
aplay -D plug:dmix some.wav &
alsaplayer -o alsa -d plug:dmix some.mp3 &

Now here is where I have troubles. alsaplayer just quits. aplay plays a little bit and segfaults. Both run fine without the plug:dmix argument.

Okay, then there is a problem with dmix. It *could* be that the ALSA
modules in kernel 2.6.2 are too old. I don't know which version is in
2.6.2, but I remember, that with 2.6.0 they were really old. But maybe
you can built the module from 1.0.2 or current CVS?

Sorry for the delay, school is kicking my ass right now.

I've upgraded to kernel 2.6.3, which includes ALSA 1.0.2c. I still have the same problem. Is dmix in some optional package that I don't have installed or what else could be causing this problem?
