Right.  maybe.  I realized after I sent that that what I was suggesting amounted to pre-mixing with the mic/line inputs for capture and then ??  I can do that with 2 cassette machines.   the kitty story is still funny..
Bill, you know your stuff.  I don't understand what you mean by 'instead of running the signal out of 16 bits you run it out of say 8 bits. '   To which program are you referring?
I'm intrigued now by the dmix plugin and the

Ecasound Users Guide

Since my Duo has no mixer in hardware, is dmix an option?   Yes, I'll keep reading.  I also dreamed of a system where I used the ensoniq  device as a pseudo-mixer.  that's nuts as far as I can see.

I'm in love with the chain object concept in ecasound.

((semi off-topic, email me)  Has anyone here used Bars&Pipes on Amiga??  that rocked in 1993 and I haven't seen anything near as cool since.   Now Microsoft owns it for some reason and they're doing nothing with it.  ??)

ah, but the Duo has input pads and mic preamps, and a +4/-10dB switch on
the output. Same things? Is that what you mean by scaling before
sending to the device? (I admit I launched my kitty out of my lap and
half-way up the stairs the first time I tested the volume from YaST)

No he means instead of running the signal out of 16 bits you run it out
of say 8 bits. This decreases the amplitude by a factor of 256. It also
increases the noise floor by that same factor.

The Duo indeed doesn't have a volume control. You'd have to scale the
audio data before sending it to the device. (Some future version of
ALSA may be able to do this.)
