Hey ho.

I am still bumfuzzled regarding my recurrent errors with my intel8x0
card in my NEC Versa P520 laptop. As far as I know, others with the
same laptop are not experiencing these semaphore errors.

The problem is that I often lose the soundcard completely, and see
these messages in /var/log/syslog.

Mar 2 10:32:41 euclid kernel: ALSA sound/pci/intel8x0.c:591: codec_write 0: semaphore
is not ready for register 0x2c
Mar 2 10:32:41 euclid kernel: ALSA sound/pci/intel8x0.c:607: codec_read 0: semaphore
is not ready for register 0x2c

I cannot predict when the semaphore error will raise its ugly head.
It appears to be unrelated to ACPI, since I have no support for ACPI
in my 2.6.3 kernel.

Today, I noticed that my soundcard shares an IRQ with my SMBus
(whatever that is). After the semaphore error above, I ran "alsasound
stop" to unload the modules and tried "alsasound start" to load them.
As expected, the load failed. I noticed the following in dmesg.

PCI: Found IRQ 5 for device 0000:00:1f.5
PCI: Sharing IRQ 5 with 0000:00:1f.3
PCI: Sharing IRQ 5 with 0000:02:07.1
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:1f.5 to 64
ALSA sound/pci/intel8x0.c:1987: codec_ready: codec is not ready [0x700001]
Intel ICH: probe of 0000:00:1f.5 failed with error -5

I looked up that device and found the following.

00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corp. 82801DB SMBus (rev 03)

Is this relevant perhaps?

I'm clutching at straws here. I'd really like to find the solution to
this persistent problem (which began in November).
