[Alsa-user] no alsamixer

Having just installed alsa after previously using OSS, I am unable to 
run alsamixer. When I execute alsamixer at the command line, I get the 
following:

   alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or 
directory

Aumix does work, but I would prefer to use alsamixer. How can I fix this?
