AFAIK, aoss provides a virtual /dev/dsp file to the app you want to run by 
some LD_PRELOAD hack.  So it uses your .asoundrc and should work regardless 
of OSS emulation in the kernel.

If you had done some .asound trickery to get your card working, that'd be one 
explanation.  Otherwise, have you compiled in/loaded the modules for the OSS 
emu?
