I have posted the details to the list over the past two or three weeks. Every config file that plays a part in ALSA. All relevant output. If any additional details are needed, I will gladly provide them.
Many problems are hardware specific, and just wont get help since no one has that hardware with that problem; likely just some minutia of configuration. But, in case someone does, you are far more likely to invoke a reply by making your more relevant problem and output appear in a single concise form.
When I see a new message continuing an old thread with no background, I just hit next. try this:
< recent update > < new outputs > < synopsis of past problem & suggestions > < useful outputs >
What card was the ice1724? I've got a ice1712. Its quirky alright, but its operating pretty much sanely now.

Myren,
Thanks for your reply, but I don't have an ice17xx card. I have a SoundBlaster Live Value and an Intel8x0. I'm trying to get either one (not both) working with ALSA.
I don't like to repost to any lists, but I did it this time because someone asked for details. I like your format for reposting, I'll use that next time I feel the need to repost.
Thanks again, Rick Knight ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
