I have an Intel motherboard with integrated Intel8x0 audio. I recently upgraded from Mandrake 9.2 to Mandrake 10, which uses the 2.6.3 kernel. Under Mandrake 9.2 (using the 2.4.xx kernel), I had no problems with this chipset. Now that I've upgraded, I have had several problems.

First, the "Master" mixer control did not show up when using the default Mandrake 2.6.3 kernel, and I had no sound. So, I installed ALSA 1.0.3 (driver, library, utilities). After that, I had the "Master" control and sound, but the mixer had NO effect on the volume. I have used both amixer and alsamixer to try to change volume, to no avail. The mixer allows me to adjust values, but has no effect on sound. Audio is always the same volume, and cannot be controlled.

it probably doesn't help much but I have intel D865PERL with same audio chip, the mixer works, except of master volume.

  debian unstable
  kernel 2.4.21-ac4
  alsa-driver-0.9.6

here's how I build alsa:

./configure --with-sequencer=yes --with-oss=yes --with-kernel=/home/erik/skusobna/linux/linux-2.4.21 --with-cards=intel8x0

...
I also found that running "alsactl store" causes the system to freeze, requiring a restart.

I don't have this problem, alsactl store works fine
