Ok, my fault. For some reason when I did dpkg-reconfigure alsa-base I
could select atiixp but it failed. Turns out I didn't have the module.
Doh.

So I compiled a new kernel and got the newest alsa-drivers and it works
fine now.

I do get a few errors when I start alsa:

ALSA /usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/pci/atiixp.c:453: atiixp: codec read
timeout

Don't know what to do about that, but at least I got Alsa working.
