What kernel would you suggest? I've used both 2.6.3 and 2.6.4. I did not build any of the default kernel sound stuff except soundcore.

Do you think it could be related to some other kernel option or the optimization level? If it would be helpful, I could email you my .config file. I'm running a 686 optimized kernel on a p3-450, intel 440bx chipset.

Try another kernel, the crash does not seem to be related to ALSA.
