Occasionaly, when upgrading alsa since version 1.0, I lost sound output.
Everything seemed to be working just fine but the speakers were just mute.
This did not happen only once. To fix it I unload all alsa modules (stop the
service if you can, or reboot without starting alsa ), remove the
file /etc/asound.state (or whatever produced by alsactl) and upgrade the
alsa-utils package ( you might find it useful to upgrade alsa-lib as well ).
After everything is installed run some program like alsamixergui (which makes
alsa configuration very easy) and alsactl store. It works for me. Hope you
