The sound worked perfectly when I took possession of the notebook a few
days ago when it was running windows XP. 2) I am not using headphones. I
am using the notebook's speaker.
There is nothing wrong with the hardware. I'd appreciate it if
people would assume I would have already checked the hardware before I
sent any messages to the ALSA mailing list. And I only unmated things
that had to do with sound. Masters/CD/treble/bass/etc.

Don't unmute _everything_, because some mixer controls control other
things than muting, but alsamixer still shows them as "(un)muted".

Try another of the output jacks.
