Here is what is and isn't working:
KDE does not report any errors.
Noatun can play back oggs successfully.
KsCD can play audio CDs successfully.
KMix works, but only the "PCM" and "PCM2" sliders affect the output volume. The "Volume" slider has no effect.
The KDE system notification sounds can't be heard.
I haven't tested recording, but "cat /dev/dsp" produces reasonable-looking output.
Here's what I did (this is a Debian system):
1. Set KDE's sound system to Autodetect.
2. Used "apt-get remove alsa-base --purge" to remove the ALSA packages I had installed.
3. Rebooted.
4. Logged into a character mode console as root. Used modconf to install these modules:
kernel/sound/oss/i810_audio (which also loaded ac97codec)
kernel/sound/core/oss/snd-mixer-oss
kernel/sound/core/oss/snd-pcm-oss
5. Rebooted once more for luck.
Hope this helps someone, Steve

Only now when I play audio CDs with KsCD, they show as playing but I don't hear anything.
I tried running KMix and turning up all the ouputs without success. I then ran aumix and turned up the outputs, also to no success.
Try alsamixer.
I tried alsamixer without success. It shows the same settings as the other mixers.
As an experiment I used modconf to load the OSS modules i810_audio, ac97_codec, and
snd-mixer-oss. Now I can play audio CDs again, so I know the internal cable is
correct. I switched KDE to explicitly use OSS. I no longer get error messages from
KDE, but I also don't get system sounds. If I run Noatun it hangs until I kill it. ogg123 reports "cannot open device oss".
Now more than ever I suspect that I need to remove some other OSS module besides i810_audio, ac97_codec, and snd-mixer-oss. However I don't know enough about Linux modules to even guess what it might be. :-(
