Piano out -> mt32 in
mt32 thru -> soundcard in
... yes it works

I couldn't do that with the midi cable (I would need a female-to-female
cable, which I don't have). However, I found somewhere else a simple
test:
I connected pins 15 and 12 in the soundcard output with a simple short
wire. Then I played something to port 64:0 and got input through
/dev/snd/midiC0D0. This told me the soundcard was actually working, and
something in the cable was not right. Then I checked the cable to see
if it was conducting properly, pin 15 was indeed connected to some
other pin in the "midi in" side, while pin 12 didn't seem to be
connected to anything in the "midi out" (or midi in). This "explains"
why I was getting good input but no output.
After quite an expedition through all stores I know, I found another
cable in the last one I was going to check (I was told about it in the
last one I even knew). This other cable gives a signal between pin 12
and the midi out connector... AND IT WORKS!!!!
So, after all, it was the cable. Now I'm a happy alsa-SBLive-MT32 user
:-) Maybe there are different cable models, maybe the cable was
defective, maybe some resistor was not the right number... but with the
right cable it works as simply as I expected.
Thanks everyone
