This is perfectly normal. Most soundcards do not provide mixing of two
sound streams in hardware, so if you want to hear those Gaim beeps (do
you? ;) while playing an mp3, then you need to configure software
mixing. This isn't really hard but a bit tricky. You need to create a
file: ~/.asoundrc or /etc/asoundrc with a text editor. Then fill it
with the details described here:
