I'm no alsa expert at all!!!
I have audigy 2 and onboard VIA 8233 the audigy is device 0 and the via is device 1 though I don;t think that matters.
Also I've midi devices and a bt878 and for midi applications alsa is for me essential cause its actually easyish
If I try your arecord command I get exactly the same error,
To record from via I always
cat /dev/dsp1 > whatever.wav
and that works. So I guess you must figure how to tell arecord you want to record 48k 2 channel.
Things that will prevent you recording (at least from device 0) include artsd
I have moved artsd and everything arts to /dev/null
After doing that I can record from the Audigy;-)
Sorry I can't help with arecord, I never use it. But aconnect is my friend
