Hi,

I currently have my soundcard jacked up to my reciever (SPDIF) and it's working great for both multi-channel and stereo sources. When looking for a way to duplicate stereo audio over all of the (5.1) channels, I found a good answer at the Wiki FAQ:
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=FAQ028

However, I'm now wondering if it's possible to write an asoundrc which takes different actions depending on the number of channels of the sound which is currently being played?

The goal would be to be able to run mplayer (for instance) with the same alsa settings with all files and have alsa do "the right thing" (ie. mix to more channels if a 2 or 4 channel sound is played and do nothing if a 6 channel sound is played).

Please CC any answers to me as I'm not subscribed to the list.

Regards,
David Härdeman
