Hi! Thanks for your suggestions. However......
As user, trying xmms, i get an error msg (permissions somewhere?). But as root, xmms appears to play. I raised volume with alsamixer, with aumixer, and unmuted on the volume panel applet in gnome. Are there more ways to unmute? Still no sound....
