I guess I cannot help you much further.
I used xine as an example, because I wrote some of the AC3 code in it, so I know exactly what it is doing when in passthru mode etc.
I don't know what mplayer is doing with the AC3 stream.
The problem with xine might be fixed if you delete the .xine/config file and run xine again.
I don't think we will be able to proceed any further with fixing this problem, until I actually get my hands on a sound card, or failing that, get access to a machine with a sound card via ssh or something.
