Most optical/coax digital inputs (at least with common PC gear) are only stereo. In order to have surround you'd need AC3 data sent over the SPDIF connection, and then I'm not sure whether it would be possible to capture it. > So how do I overlay the audio from the optical spdif to the line-in of > the pvr 250? I'm not familiar with the pvr-250, however I'm guessing it's an analogue input - so you'd need to convert your digital SPDIF connection back to analogue (losing audio quality in the process) then pass it to the PVR, then the PVR would convert it back into digital (losing more quality.) You're probably better off capturing your optical input at the same time as you capture video with the PVR, and then replacing the audio track in the MPEG file with the data from the optical input after the capture has finished. This of course depends on whether the card creates the MPEG stream with audio, or whether it's the capture program you're using - e.g. if you're using mencoder you could tell it to get the audio from a different source instead. But chances are, optical input or not, it'd still be only stereo. > Or am I going about this all wrong? It's probably not related to ALSA, as it seems that it's more to do with the PVR hardware device itself. Without knowing how you're actually performing the capture it's difficult to tell what you'd need to change.
